smile 和 laugh 有什么不同？
首先，smile 和 laugh 虽然都被翻译为 "笑" ，但两者在变化形上有一些不同。
smile 既是动词（笑）又是名词（笑容），
laugh 是动词（笑），也可以是可数名词（笑），
但 laugh 还有一个变化形 laughter，也是名词，
但 laughter 不可数，是更抽象一点的 "笑声" 。
【例句】
She smiled faintly and said nothing.
她淡淡笑着，不发一语。
He is a fun guy, always making me laugh.
他是个有趣的人，总是令我发笑。
I could hear suppressed laughter coming from his room.
我可以听到从他房间传出压抑的笑声。
除了变化形外，在意义上 smile 和 laugh 也有些微差异。
通常 smile 是在表达某种满足感、友善之意，
你可以想像成 smile 是一种脸上的表情；
而 laugh 多半是被某些有趣、意料之外的事情逗笑，
多半会是指有发出声响、笑声的举动。
举例来说，
像是今天出门天气很好，天空很蓝，于是你会 smile；
晚上你去听了一场单口相声，梗很对你的胃，你就会 laugh。

先从 smile 作为名词的时候学起。
- faint / thin smile 淡笑
- broad / wide smile 大大的笑
- sheepish smile 害羞地笑

【例句】
Hearing his hurtful words, she gave a sad and wry smile.
听到他伤人的话之后，她露出充满悲伤的苦笑。

be all smiles
当一个人全部都是微笑的时候，就代表 "笑容洋溢、满面春风" 。

sb’s smile broadens
笑容越来越宽广，也就是笑的幅度越来越大的意思。

wipe the smile off one’s face
wipe off 意思是擦除、去除，
wipe the smile off one's face 则是将笑容从某人的脸上去除，

smile from ear to ear
笑的范围从一只耳朵到另一只耳朵，意思就是笑得合不拢嘴。
【例句】
Upon hearing the good news from his teacher, he smiled from ear to ear.
听到老师说的好消息让他笑得合不拢嘴。
fortune smiles on sb
smile on 的意思是垂青，
fortune smiles on sb 可以翻成 "命运对⋯⋯微笑" ，也就是某人特别的幸运或成功。
【例句】
After overcoming countless difficulties, he knew that fortune started to smile on him.
在克服无数困难后，他知道命运女神开始对他微笑了。
laugh 笑 (v.) 笑声 (n.)
我们首先从 laugh 作为名词时学起。
- light / little / slight / short / small laugh 轻笑
- big / good / great laugh 大笑

laugh one’s head off
one's 可以随意替换成 my, your 等等，
字面上 "把头笑掉" 的意思就是 "笑到疯掉、笑翻了" 。
【例句】
When I heard his story of the day, I can't help but laugh my head off.
当我听到他那天的故事，我无法控制笑疯了。
not know whether to laugh or cry
其实依照字面翻译，你完成可以知道这句意思是：
"不知道该哭还是笑、不知如何是好" ，
除了哭笑不得的无奈外，也可以是不知道当下如何反应。

When my ex-boyfriend told me they were getting married I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
当我前男友告诉我他们要结婚的时候，我不知道该如何反应才好。
try not to laugh
try not to laugh 可以是为了不失礼而忍笑，也可以很单纯是 "试着不要笑" 。
【例句】
I tried not to laugh so hard, but failed eventually.
