delay (v.) （使）延迟、延误／(n.) 延迟，延误，延期

泛指所有一切晚于计画或预期发生的事件或情况。

【例句】

作为动词时

主动：

She wants to delay her retirement.
她想要延后她的退休时间。

被动：

They were delayed by traffic.
他们因交通而延迟了。

作为名词时

可数：

The waitress apologized for the delay.
服务生为延迟而道歉。

不可数：

The door must be repaired without delay.
那扇门必须立刻修理。

hesitate (v.) 犹豫，踌躇

通常因为紧张、尴尬、焦虑等心理因素，导致做某件事情之前停顿，或速度特别慢。

【例句】

无宾语时，多表示因焦虑、紧张等原因而停顿迟疑。

He hesitated and waited for her mom to say something.
他迟疑了一下，等他妈妈开口。

She hesitated about / over accepting the proposal.
她在犹豫要不要接受求婚。

有宾语时，多表示因怀疑、不确定等原因而不愿意做某事或速度放慢。

He is hesitating to pour out the real feeling to his friends.
他在犹豫要不要把心里真正的感受和他的朋友说。

put off (phr.) 延后；拖延

表示延后某事，尤指因为不想去完成而拖延。

【例句】

put off for + 时间：

The conference call has been put off for a week.
线上会议的时间已被延后一周。

put off + Ving：

I can't put off doing my work any longer.
我不能再拖着不去做我的工作了。

hold off (phr.) 推迟，延迟

尤指故意地不立刻执行某事，或拖延。

【例句】

He held off (on) making the decision until his wife came back.
在他妻子回来之前，他决定延迟做出决定的时间。

sit on (phr.) 拖延，延迟

表示延迟处理某件事。

【例句】

The company has been sitting on my complaint letter for more than a month.
公司将我的投诉信搁置了超过一个月。

procrastinate (v.) 拖延，耽搁

通常指因为无趣等原因，持续性地延后执行某件该做的事。一般不接宾语。

【例句】

Our teacher always tells us not to procrastinate, but we rarely follow what he says.
老师总是告诉我们不要拖延，但是我们很少遵循。

temporize (v.) （为了争取有利条件而）拖延时间

正式用法。为争取更多时间或有利条件，

而避免在时间内做出决策或给出明确答案。通常不接宾语。

【例句】

He temporized in the negotiation meeting in order to gain the position of control.
他在谈判会议中拖延了时间，只为了取得主导权。

prevaricate (v.) 支吾，搪塞，含糊其词；顾左右而言他

正式用法。指拖延回答时间，

以避开说出真实的想法或答案。通常不接宾语。

【例句】

He accused the government of prevaricating about the real cost of the project.
他指控政府对于该企划的真正成本含糊其词。

play for time (phr.) 拖延时间

一种拖延战术直到准备好为止。

【例句】

It's not the right time to sign the contract. We need to play for time.
现在不是个签合约的正确时机，我们必须采取拖延战术。
