【英语口语】只会说 Again 吗？十个英语句型让你有礼貌地请对方 "说清楚"

英语学习者最常遇到的问题之一就是听不懂对方在说什么。
可能是因为对方的口音特殊，
或是因为一些非常口语化的连音，
导致常常需要请对方再讲一次。
这时很多人会习惯只说一句 "Again?"
但其实这算是比较没有礼貌的说法喔！

What do you mean by ... ?
____是什么意思？
当对方讲了一个你听不懂的单词或短语时，
最直接的方式就是用 "What do you mean by … ?"
请他再解释一下。
如果想要更有礼貌一点，可以用
"I'm not sure what you mean by … . "
（我不确定你说___是什么意思。）
这个直述句型。
【例句】
- Sorry, what do you mean by that?
不好意思，请问那是什么意思呢？ - I'm not sure what you mean by "formal dress code." Could you show me some examples?
我不太知道你所指的 "正式服装" 是什么意思。可以给我一些范例吗？
I don’t understand.
我不太理解。
另一个礼貌地要求对方再解释一次的方法，
就是用 "I don't understand" 让对方知道自己没有理解。
也可以说 "I'm not sure that I understand." 。
【例句】
- Sorry, I don't understand your question. Would you mind rephrasing it for me?
抱歉，我不太理解你的问题，可以请你再换个方式问一次吗？ - Hmm, I'm not sure I understand. Could you explain that again?
嗯......我不确定我有没有理解。可以请你再解释一次吗？
I’m (a little) confused.
我不是很清楚。
除了 "I don't understand." 外，
也可以用 "I'm a (little) confused ."
来表示自己没有理解清楚。
【例句】
- Sorry, I'm confused . Should I take this medicine three times a day or four?
不好意思，我不是很清楚我应该是要一天吃三次药还是四次。 - I'm a little confused about what you just said.
我对于你刚刚说的事情不是很清楚。
I don’t (quite) follow.
我理解得不是很清楚。
"I don't (quite) follow." 是 "I don't understand." 和 "I'm confused." 的另一种说法。
【例句】
- Hmm, I don't quite follow you. Could you explain that to me again?
嗯......我好像不是很理解你说的。可以请你再跟我解释一遍吗？ - I'm afraid I'm not following . Could you be more specific?
我想我可能没有很理解你说的。可以请你再解释地更详细一点吗？
You mean … ?
你的意思是…… 吗？
如果觉得自己似懂非懂，又不想麻烦人家再说一次，
你可以用 "You mean … ?" 或是完整的 "Do you mean … ?"
来直接告诉对方你对所说内容的解读，
如果错误的话，通常对方都会主动再解释一次，
而要是正确的话，也可以有双重确认的效果，
可说是一举两得。
【例句】
A: Does Thursday work for you?
周四你可以吗？
B: You mean tomorrow? Or a week from now?
你是指明天吗？还是下周四？
As in …
是指…… 吗？
和 "You mean … ?" 一样，
"as in …" 有 "in the sense of …" 或 "meaning …" 的意思，
都可以用来表达自己对事情的理解。
【例句】
A: Does Thursday work for you?
周四你可以吗？
B: Thursday as in tomorrow?
你是指明天的那个周四吗？
So you're saying ... ?
所以你是说…… 吗？
"So you're saying … ?" 也是一种确认自己理解有没有误的说法。
【例句】
A: Do you believe in aliens ?
你相信有外星人吗？
B: Well, the universe is big, and there's still a lot we don't know about it.
宇宙是个很大的地方，我们对它的理解也很有限。
A: So you're saying aliens might exist?
所以你是说外星人真的有可能存在吗?
B: Yeah, I think it's likely.
没错，我觉得很有可能。
If I understand you correctly …
如果我的理解没错，......？
比起上面提到的几个确认自己理解的句型，
"If I understand you correctly" 会稍微更正式一点。
【例句】
- So if I understand you correctly , you feel that you were unfairly fired from your job?
如果我没理解错的话，你觉得你被解雇是件很不公平的事，对吗？ - Let me see if I understand you correctly . You're saying that this policy would create 10 million new jobs?
如果我理解正确的话，你的意思是这个政策会创造上千万个工作机会，对吗？
有时候可能也会听到母语者用过去式 "If I understood you correctly."，
所以现在式和过去式都是可以的喔！

Could you elaborate (on that)?
可以更详细一点说明吗？
"Elaborate" 这个动词有 "详细说明" 的意思，
也是请求对方再说一次时很好用的词！
注意！如果 Elaborate 后面要接名词的话要加 on 喔！
【例句】
- Sorry, could you elaborate, please?
不好意思，可以请你详细说明吗？ - Could you elaborate on that for me? I'm not sure I follow.
可以请你详细说明这一点吗？我不太确定我的理解有没有正确。
Could you break that down for me?
可以请你分段解释给我听吗？
"Break something down" 这个动词短语的意思是 "拆解某样东西" ，
在这里就是请对方将整件事情或整个计划分开来解释。
【例句】
- I think I know what you mean, but could you break that down for me?
我大致上理解你说的，不过可以还是请你再分段解释一次吗？ - Could you break that down for me? How much money did he steal and who are all the victims ?
你可以再慢慢地解释一次给我听吗？他偷了多少钱，还有所有的受害者总共有哪几位？
