英语单词中有许多长的相似的单词，常常让人混淆、搞不清楚，
你知道 last, latest, at least, latter, later, lately, outlast, lastly 这八个单词的差别吗？

首先，先辨别 later、latest、latter、last 这四个单词，他们是 late 的比较级和最高级变化，
分别有不同的意思，并产生了两组变化，当 late 表示的是时间上的晚、迟，
它的比较级就是 later、最高级 latest；如果 late 的意思是指次序上的后面、后者，则是以 latter 表示比较级，last 最高级。

later 以后、后来
He didn't have a girlfriend during later years.
他后来那几年都没有交女朋友。
1. later 与表示时间的名词连用可以表示 "...之后" 的意思
He safely came home twenty days later.
二十天后，他平安的回家了。
2. 后期的、晚期的

latest
1. late 的最高级，表示最慢、最迟。
Why are you so busy these days? You always came the latest and left the earliest.
你最近为什么这么忙？你总是来的最晚，走的最早。
2. 最近、最新
This is JK Rowling's latest book.
这是 JK Rowling 最新的书。
3. 作名词用，表示最新消息。
Have you heard the latest about the competition?

latter
latter 是 late 在次序意义上的比较级，常与 the 连用，
以 the latter 表示两件事物的后者，而前者则是以 the former 呈现。
Of the two choices, I prefer the latter.

last
1. last 表示最后的，而 first 则表示第一个
I left the classroom last afternoon. And I didn't see any strange people.
我是下午最后离开教室的人，我没有看到任何奇怪、可疑的人。
2. last 表示上一次的、已经过去的，和 next 意思相对
We met at school last Monday and talked a lot.
我们上周一约了在学校见面，也聊了很多话。
3. "the last + 名词" 则常用来表达最不合适、最不可能、最不愿意
Tommy is the last man I expected to see there.
Tommy 是我万万没想到会在那里遇见的人。
lately
lately 和 recently 意思相近，表达的是最近、近来的意义。
I haven't called Mom lately.
最近我都没打给妈妈。
lastly
表示最后的，而 finally, at last, lastly, in the end 在中文翻译里都有最后、
终于或经过一段时间的意思，但使用方法有所不同。
1. finally 是在说经过一段时间后总算发生的事，一般常是历经困难、波折后会使用。
There were no buses then and we finally got home at 4 pm.
那时已经没有公车了，我们最后凌晨四点才到家。
2. at last 通常是经过很长一段延后，可能有不耐烦的情绪时，
用来安慰自己或他人，大意为至少最后...（得到什么、做了什么等）。
She has at last given me back my book that she promised to return to me.
至少她最后有把她答应要还我的书归还。
3. lastly 常见情况是在说众多的人、项目的最后一个。
I am honored to receive this award. I really thanked my company, my parents, but lastly, I must thank all my friends for their help.
我很荣幸得到这个奖。我真的很感谢我的公司、父母，而最后我也要感谢所有帮助我的朋友。
4. in the end 表达的是一种在历经一段长时间的变动或讨论后的最后结果。
And then, in the end, after months of discussion they agreed on her suggestion.
接着，在经过数月的讨论后，最终他们同意她的建议。
outlast
表示比…活得长；比…持续时间长。
The old lady outlasted all her children. It was sad that she had to see her children die before her.
那个老太太比她所有孩子都长寿。白发人送黑发人令人心痛。
at least
表示不管如何、至少、反正。
You'll have to wait for at least an hour.
你至少要等一个小时。
Even if she didn't want to come to your wedding, she could at least have sent a congratulation to you.
即使不想来参加婚礼，她起码也应该给妳个祝贺。
